‘Self-care is not a luxury, it’s a necessity…’
A quote we love to live by, and feel is even more true in the current climate. Looking after your own well-being is often something that can be pushed to the bottom of our priority list, especially since a lot of us feel there’s are always something more important that needs paying attention to.
As anxiety levels go through the roof and with a lot on our minds, incorporating one or two activities into your routine to help you find some moments of calm, promote positive mental wellbeing and reduce some level of anxiety, which, let’s face it, is something we can all do with right now.
So, we’ve pulled together some of our favourite ways to boost our overall well-being, helping us all feel a little less weight on our shoulders…
Meditation is a great way to focus your mind and give direction to your thoughts. There are so many studies that shown the positive impact it can have on mental (and physical!) health, including helping to manage stress and anxiety, improving the quality and quantity of sleep, enhancing self-awareness and helping to boost general focus. It has even been shown to help control pain and improve age -related memory loss. (crazy, right?)
Getting started with meditation can feel a liiiittle daunting but it doesn’t need to be. Grab 5 or 10 minutes when you can and start with guided meditation through an app. We love Headspace or Simple Habit which both include really simple, easy to follow meditations that cater to everyone without being overwhelming or making you feel silly.
When it all gets a bit overwhelming, its easy to grab your phone and mindlessly scroll through various social media apps and websites until, before you know it, you’ve lost a good couple of hours of your day. So, limiting the time spent on your phone can help reduce anxiety and an overall low mood.
Now, we aren’t talking about cutting it out all together. We all know the benefits of some little happy corners of the internet but setting time limits and turning on notifications for when you hit your limit can make all the difference and stop us feeling overwhelmed.
Clear the Clutter:
Go all Mary Kondo and tackle that tidying task you’ve been meaning to since, well… forever. Whether its organising your wardrobe so there’s no more ‘where did I put that shirt’ moments, clearing out your beauty cupboard to get rid of expired or unwanted products (extra points if you donate your unopened beauty products to initiatives like Beauty Banks!) or sorting out your food cupboard into a perfectly arranged oasis of organisation… we’ve all had those moments when the open packet of rice falls out of the cupboard and chaos ensues….
Set a time limit, so when your half an hour cleaning time is up you have a sense of accomplishment in completing a short task in a small window of time as opposed to having open-ended cleaning sessions that seem to go on forever.
Create a daily schedule:
Let’s face it, we all love structure so creating a daily schedule that builds in all aspects of your life can be a great way to promote positive thinking and improve overall wellbeing. Start with work and the tasks you absolutely have to get done that day, then make sure you build in time for exercise and put moments in your diary for lunch time and breaks. Plus, assign time for any personal admin you need to get done too… need to call the energy company or order a present for a friend? Block that time out.
Sounds simple but daily schedules are an easy way to keep a clear mind and not let things get on top of you.
Be it baking a cake or creating a photo album, the act of being creative will leave you happier and more enthusiastic, not only whilst you’re doing the task but afterwards when you’re admiring (or eating) your handy work too.
You don’t have to be a pro, none of us here at Scientia HQ will be entering the next series of Great British Bake Off that’s for sure, but it’s not about the quality. It’s the pride you feel at completing the task that promotes a more positive mental state.
Take some pamper time:
Our favourite! Give yourself some time to go through the rituals of your skincare routine. At Scientia, we’ve always been strong believers that beauty should make you FEEL good and not just look good, pampering truly gives us some time away from day-to-day stresses to focus on ourselves, relax and enjoy.
