What is slugging? The latest k-beauty trend taking TikTok by storm … Slugging promises to leave you glowing and waking up to balanced, super hydrated, baby-soft skin.

So how does it work? In short, slugging involves putting a layer of Vaseline on your face to help prevent water loss. Think it sounds kinda off-putting…? Well, us too. But here’s the theory behind it.

Why is it called slugging?

Well the term come from the fact that after you coat your skin in Vaseline you do end up looking shiny and kinda slimy… like a slug. Still not sounding particularly appealing? There is actually some science behind it, as the ultimate way to really moisturise, moisturise, moisturise.

What does slugging do for your skin?

Slugging is essentially coating your face in an occlusive moisturiser. An occlusive helps create a physical barrier on your skin to lock in hydration and prevent water loss. Your skin barrier (the top later of the skin) can get damaged by things like pollution, heat or too many harsh skincare products. We’ve all been there. Dry, flaky, red, irritated, more prone to breakouts. You’ve damaged your moisture barrier. Slugging helps repair that damage by creating a moist environment that allows your barrier to slowly rebuild itself.

So how do you slug your face?

Rather than using a petroleum-based balm (which might be putting some of you off trying the technique), you can actually slug with anything that provides a barrier between your skin and the environment. It’s one of the ways we’ve always recommended to use our Ceramide Skin Rescue Moisture Barrier Balm. A gel like balm, it drenches skin in a cooling veil of hydration and is blended with key actives like 5 types of ceramides, hyaluronic acid and fatty acids & lipids which are perfect for restoring a damaged skin barrier, or simply giving skin some much needed love and attention.
