The one thing they all have in common?  Healthy, glowy and radiant skin that a girl could obsess over for daaays. Loved by royalty and A-listers alike, its time discover the benefits of Rosehip Oil for skin ourselves.

What is Rosehip Oil?

Glowy and hydrated skin- sounds amazing right? But let’s start with the basics, what actually is Rosehip Oil? Rosehip Oil is the fruit of a rose from specific wild rose plants, derived from the leftover seed pods that remain after the petals of a rose have fallen off.  The oil is mechanically extracted from these crushed seeds using a cold-pressing method. This very specific process helps to maintain the amazing nutritional value of the oil, which contains several vitamins, antioxidants, and fatty acids which make it such an amazingly potent product when it comes to skincare.

The Benefits of Rosehip Oil for skin

Rosehip Oil is chocked full of Vitamin A and Vitamin C, which both help skin look fresh and youthful, whilst still being gentle, safe and soothing for all skin types. Lipid-rich, this soothing oil helps boost hydration levels deep within your skin, especially when combined with other ingredients such as antioxidants. And that’s just the beginning, read on for all the juicy details on the benefits of Rosehip Oil for skin..

Brightens skin

Turns out Rosehip Oil contains a higher content of vitamin C of any fruit or vegetable (sorry oranges, you’ve been pipped…) Vitamin C is known to have a skin-brightening effect, giving your complexion a dazzling J-Lo like radiance. Collagen stimulating, it can also improve skin’s firmness and prevent fine lines- sign. us. up.

Anti-ageing and firming

Rosehip Oil is also super rich in vitamin A (aka the cult fave retinol) which is known to help with smoothing fine lines and thickening the deeper layers of your skin, making it feel firmer and tighter. By improving the skins moisture levels, it can help iron out those wrinkles. Plus, luckily for any mamas-to-be the levels of vitamin A in Rosehip Oil have been proven to be safe during pregnancy- unlike its ultra-strength counterpart Retinol.

Fades dark spots and scars

Apart from smoothing and firming, research has shown that vitamin A has even been known to mildly even out skin tone, especially if you have acne scars. Although not proven, they think this is down to the role that fatty acids (which are present in vitamin A) play in how skin cells rebuild post-injury. After several months of applying Rosehip Oil, you may find that your dark spots aren’t so dark, although results are dependent on the individual.

Damage protection

Rosehip Oil contains things called tocopherols and carotenoids these are antioxidants that help to protect the skin from oxidative stress. Our skin is constantly battling pollutants (think UV rays, car fumes or blue light exposure from your devices) and all of these cause harm to our skin. Ready for some science? The antioxidants found in Rosehip Oil neutralize free radicals (a type of molecule that damages your cells) by donating an electron to each of them, which essentially cancels out their skin damaging powers. Rosehip Oil also works to reinforce your skin's barrier, preventing any future damage as well.

Eases acne prone skin

Okay, so we know oil is probably the last thing you want to apply to oily or acne prone skin- but trust us it’s really not. (In fact, we have a whole blog about why oil can actually be pretty amazing for oily skin here- but that’s beside the point.) Rosehip Oil is incredibly soothing and may help ease that redness and irritation associated with breakouts, plus it’s noncomedogenic, which basically means it won’t clog pores. Aaand as we mentioned before Rosehip Oil contains vitamin A, and as you probably know retinoids (vitamin A derivatives) are often prescribed as prescription acne treatments, since vitamin A helps to speed skin cell turnover.

Soothes redness and irritation

Yep- as mentioned before Rosehip oil is amazingly soothing- not just for acne prone skin types but for everyone. It’s because it contains anti-inflammatory fatty acids, such as linoleic acid, alpha-linoleic acid, and oleic acid. Skin conditions like rosacea and eczema are inflammatory disorders, meaning through these fatty acids, Rosehip Oil may help to reduce that inflammation and redness.

Moisturises skin

Last but not least Rosehip Oil is incredibly moisturising thanks to its abundance of fatty acids (omegas 3 and 6). Not only do they soak into the skin to hydrate, they also help with ceramide formation—which is essentially a substance that keeps the walls of skin cells strong so they can better retain moisture, hydrating  the protective outer skin layer and giving your complexion a soft, hydrated radiance that dreams are made of.
